Simple daily habits and techniques that keep your teeth and gums healthy for life.
Oral health is a key indicator of overall well-being. Good daily habits — proper brushing and flossing — are the foundation of a healthy smile. Here is how to protect your teeth and gums between visits.
Brushing
- Brush twice a day for at least two minutes, and clean your tongue with a tongue scraper.
- Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled or electric brush.
- Hold the brush at an angle toward the gum line and use gentle, short circular motions.
- Rinse your brush, store it upright to air-dry, and keep it uncovered.
Flossing
Brushing cannot reach the tiniest spaces between teeth and below the gum line — so floss daily. Guide the floss gently between teeth, curve it into a C-shape around each tooth, and slide it under the gum line without forcing it.
Other tips
- Use a fluoride mouthwash to support your dental health.
- Avoid toothpicks and objects that can injure your gums.
- Stop smoking and chewing tobacco.
