From deep cleaning to surgery, the treatments that control gum disease and protect your smile.
The goals of gum disease treatment are to help gums reattach to teeth, reduce swelling and pocket depth, lower the risk of infection, and stop the disease from progressing. The right approach depends on the severity of your condition.
Deep cleaning
The first-line treatment is a careful deep cleaning below the gum line. Scaling removes tartar from above and below the gum line, and root planing smooths the tooth roots so the gums can reconnect.
Medication
- Antibiotic gel applied to gum pockets after deep cleaning.
- Antiseptic chips or microspheres that release medication over time.
- Enzyme suppressors that protect gum tissue.
- Oral antibiotics for more severe infections.
Surgery
- Gum graft: tissue is moved to cover exposed roots and stop bone loss.
- Flap procedure: gums are lifted to clean deep tartar, then secured snugly around the tooth.
