Treatment for teeth cracked or fractured by accidents, injury, or everyday wear.
Accidents and injuries can crack or fracture a tooth. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all; other times you may notice pain when chewing or sensitivity to hot, cold, or spicy foods. We assess the damage and choose the right way to restore your tooth.
Symptoms of a fractured tooth
- Pain, especially while chewing.
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, or spicy foods.
- Swelling and a persistent toothache after an injury.
How we treat fractured teeth
- Bonding: composite resin fills and restores the fractured area.
- Cosmetic contouring: rough edges are rounded and polished smooth.
- Dental crown: a cap that protects and restores a more severely damaged tooth.
- Veneers: thin porcelain shells to cover chips on front teeth in good condition.
- Extraction: removal when the tooth cannot be saved, to protect the root and nerves.
Preventing tooth fractures
- Avoid chewing hard foods, ice, and candy.
- Keep up good daily brushing, flossing, and gum care.
- Wear a mouthguard during sports and physical activity.
