Plaque is the main culprit — but several other factors raise your risk.
Plaque, a thin layer of bacteria constantly forming on teeth, is the main cause of gum disease. As plaque hardens into tartar it develops infection, and untreated gingivitis can cause the gums to separate from the tooth.
Contributing factors
- Poor oral hygiene that lets plaque and tartar linger.
- Smoking or chewing tobacco, which slows gum healing.
- Diseases such as diabetes, cancer, or HIV that affect immunity.
- Medications that reduce protective saliva flow.
- Family history and crooked or overlapping teeth that trap plaque.
- Alcohol, stress, mouth breathing, and poor nutrition.
