The warning signs of gum disease — many of them easy to miss until it advances.
Gum disease begins when plaque builds up and hardens into tartar, which only a professional cleaning can remove. Both plaque and tartar harbor bacteria that irritate the gums and lead to gingivitis and, eventually, periodontitis.
Symptoms of gum disease
- Bleeding, tender, or painful gums when brushing or flossing.
- Red and swollen gums.
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth.
- Receding gums that make teeth look longer.
- Deep pockets forming between gums and teeth.
- Loose or shifting teeth and changes in your bite.
- Sensitive teeth as exposed dentin reacts to cold.
Even without symptoms
Gum disease can be painless and produce few obvious signs, even in advanced stages, and may affect only a few teeth. Only a dentist or periodontist can accurately identify and assess its progress — another reason regular checkups matter.
