How we detect gum disease early, when it is most treatable.
Gum disease is widespread but largely preventable, and the earlier it is caught the better the outcome. During routine checkups we look for the signs and measure the health of your gums.
How we diagnose gum disease
- Measuring gum pockets with a periodontal probe — healthy pockets are 1 to 3 mm deep.
- Dental X-rays to check for bone loss beneath the gum line.
- Checking for loose teeth caused by bone loss or bite problems.
- Assessing sensitivity, which can indicate receding gums.
- Examining gums for swelling, redness, and bleeding.
Early care matters
If we notice signs of gingivitis or periodontitis, we may refer you to a periodontist. The sooner you seek care, the greater your chance of reversing the damage.
