What to do when a dental crown loosens or falls out — and how we restore it.
A crown caps and protects a weak or damaged tooth and can last for years. But an accident, injury, or wear can loosen it. If your crown falls out, do not panic — keep it safe and call us so we can restore your tooth promptly.
What to do with a loosened crown
Crowns are made of non-toxic dental-grade ceramic, so swallowing one is not harmful. If you still have it, rinse it, keep it in a small container, and contact us to have it re-cemented or replaced. A missing crown should not be ignored — the exposed tooth can deteriorate quickly.
What not to do
- Do not use household glue to reattach the crown yourself.
- Avoid hard or sticky foods and chewing on the affected side.
- Be gentle when brushing around the exposed tooth.
How we restore your tooth
We evaluate both the tooth and the crown to decide whether to re-cement the existing crown or place a new one. We may add filling material to rebuild the tooth, then fit a temporary or, in some cases, a same-day crown to fully restore it.
