Rebuild jawbone volume and density to support implants and restore your smile.
A dental bone graft increases the amount and density of bone in an area of the jaw where bone is insufficient or has been lost. It is often needed before a dental implant when there is not enough bone to hold the implant securely.
When you may need bone grafting
Bone can be lost to gum disease, developmental defects, the empty space left after an extraction, or facial injury. At your consultation we examine your mouth and take an X-ray to determine whether grafting is needed.
How the procedure works
After cleaning the area, we make an incision in the gum and place the graft material — which may be your own bone or a synthetic material — between the sections of bone that need to grow together. We secure it with a membrane, dissolvable adhesive, or small screws, then close the incision and let it heal.
Recovery and after-care
- Use ice packs to relieve pain and swelling.
- Eat soft, bland foods and avoid hard foods for a few days.
- Sleep with your head elevated when possible.
- Avoid hot drinks, smoking, and alcohol while you heal.
- Rinse gently with warm water and avoid strenuous activity.
