Prompt care when a filling falls out, before decay has a chance to worsen.
Fillings can loosen and fall out from grinding, bacteria seeping into the margins, decay, or biting hard foods. A lost filling exposes the tooth and can worsen quickly, so it is best to have it replaced promptly.
What we do when a filling falls out
We examine the tooth and take an X-ray to find the best treatment.
- New filling: we clean the cavity and place a new filling — often tooth-colored composite, which can last 10 to 15 years with good care.
- Root canal: if decay has reached the nerve, we remove the infection and protect the tooth, usually with a crown.
- Tooth extraction: a last resort when the tooth is too damaged to save.
Protecting your fillings
- Brush and floss daily to keep decay from forming at the margins.
- Avoid biting very hard or sticky foods.
- Keep regular checkups so small problems are caught early.
