Understand the stages of gum disease and how it progresses if left untreated.
Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by bacterial growth in the mouth. Left untreated, it can damage the tissues that support your teeth and ultimately lead to tooth loss.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the mildest, earliest form of gum disease, causing swollen, red, and bleeding gums. At this stage the teeth are still firmly in place and no bone damage has occurred. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral hygiene.
Periodontitis
Untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. Plaque hardens into tartar along the gum line, irritating the gums. The inner gum and bone pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that collect debris and become infected. Over time, the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place break down, and teeth can loosen and be lost.
