A closer look at the stages, signs, and prevention of periodontal disease.
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the gums. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth and bone loss — and it has been linked to serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
Stages of gum disease
- Gingivitis: a mild form affecting only the gums, caused by bacteria irritating and inflaming the gum line.
- Periodontitis: a bacterial infection that attacks the gums and the bone around the teeth, causing receding gums and bone loss.
- Advanced periodontitis: bacteria reach the roots, leading to major bone loss and eventual tooth loss.
Signs and prevention
Watch for red, swollen, or tender gums, gums that bleed easily or pull away from the teeth, persistent bad breath, receding gums, and loose teeth.
The best prevention is excellent oral hygiene: brush twice a day, floss once a day, and see us for regular checkups and professional cleanings.
What treatment involves
Mild gum disease can be treated with scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar and help the gums reattach. More advanced cases may require a surgical flap procedure to lift the gums, clean the teeth, and suture the gums back in place.
