Understand, diagnose, and treat gum disease to protect your teeth and overall health.

Gum disease is a common but preventable infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Caught early, it is highly treatable. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and affect your overall health.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is an infection caused by plaque and tartar buildup along and below the gumline. Early-stage gingivitis causes red, swollen gums; advanced periodontitis can damage the bone and tissue that hold your teeth in place.

Signs and symptoms

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums.
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing.
  • Persistent bad breath.
  • Receding gums or teeth that look longer.
  • Loose teeth or a change in your bite.

Causes of gum disease

Plaque buildup is the primary cause, but smoking, certain medications, diabetes, hormonal changes, and genetics can increase your risk. Good daily hygiene and regular cleanings are the best prevention.

Diagnosis

We assess your gums, measure the depth of the spaces around your teeth, and take X-rays when needed to check the supporting bone. This helps us catch gum disease early and recommend the right care.

Treatment

Treatment depends on severity. Early cases respond to professional cleaning and improved home care. More advanced cases may need deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) and a tailored maintenance plan to restore and protect your gum health.
