Plaque control and lifestyle habits that keep gum disease from progressing.
In almost all cases, gum disease can be kept from worsening with good plaque control: professional cleanings at least twice a year, plus daily brushing and flossing at home.
Daily plaque control
- Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss every day to remove plaque your brush cannot reach.
- Use interdental picks or small brushes between teeth as directed.
- Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce bacteria and bad breath.
Lifestyle changes that help
- Stop smoking — smokers are far more likely to develop gum disease.
- Lower stress, which can weaken your immune response.
- Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins C and E to support healing.
- Avoid clenching or grinding, which stresses the supporting tissues.
